Giants make easy work of Rockets
The Delhi Giants scored a comprehensive win over the Ahmedabad Rockets, defeating them by 9 wickets with Avishka Gunawardene staring with an explosive half century.
Rockets captain Damien Martyn, won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked dry and flat. The Rockets opened their innings with their left-right hand combination of Hinds & Dholpure. T Sudhindra, who has been admirably opening the Giants bowling attack with Shane Bond, drew first blood castling Dholpure in the second, over reducing the Rockets at 3/1.
Some sloppy running found Hinds short of the crease, sending both the Rockets openers back in the dugout in the 3rd over, leaving the scorecard reading 7/2. At the end of the 5th over the Rockets were struggling at 15/3 with Hinds, Dholpure & Goodwin back in the Rockets Dugout.
It was left to Rockets captain Martyn & unsuccessful pinch hitter Rakesh Patel, to repair the early setbacks, at 24/3 at the end of the 7th over. The halfway mark of the Rockets innings read 36/4, with hardly any momentum to the innings. Boundaries were a distant dream for the Rockets, with both Sriram & Martyn strictly dealing in singles.
One of the triumph cards for the Giants has been the prodigal spin talent of Ali Murtaza, who bowls in the crucial middle overs & his consistency of maintaining a tight leash on the best of batsmen continued in this match. At the end of the 16th over the Rockets were still struggling at 69/4.
Sriram & Martyn were battling it out for the Rockets getting their half century partnership at the end of the 17th over. The Rockets batsmen could not accelerate their scoring rate & their innings finally ended at 107/6 with only 8 boundaries in the entire innings.
In reply the Giants opened the innings with Mohnish Mishra & Avishka Gunawardene. The Giants approach was cautious in nature with the first 3 overs bringing only 9 runs, at 3 runs per over. At the end of the 5th over the openers were finding their groove & the Giants were placed comfortably at 25 for no loss.
Gunawardene was taking the attack to the Rockets bowling hoisting Patel for two huge sixes in the 6th over followed by an inside edge to the boundary. Martyn was looking for a desperate breakthrough and brought on his young off spinner P. Bhima Rao in the 9th over but Gunawardene was in an aggressive mood dealing with some serious boundaries.
In the 10th over Sriram got the Rockets their first breakthrough getting Mishra caught at long on for a well made 18. At that stage the Giants were cursing along well at 66/1. Abhinav Bali joined the explosive Gunawardene in the middle matching him stroke for stroke, taking the Giants score to 90/1 at the end of the 14th over. Three consecutive hits to the boundary from Bali saw the Giants romp home in the 16th over.
