Shah sees benefits of the IPL

Middlesex and England batsman Owais Shah believes the Indian Premier League could propel cricket up to the same level as football.

The Indian Premier League, which will be broadcast live on Setanta Sports, has captured the imagination as the cream of the cricketing crop have been lured to the tournament by astronomical pay packets.

There is sure to be high drama over the course of the six weeks of the competition and Shah admits that although concerned by the ever-increasing demands placed on players, he feels promoting the game can only be good for all concerned.

”To accommodate the internationals and the different schedules and the playing too much factor are concerns, there is a lot of international cricket being played at the moment and if you make it a schedule where the rest periods are shorter, it may impact on performance,” Shah told Setanta Sports News.

”But the IPL schedule is a good idea as you are only playing for six weeks and the money is also a big issue.

"Financial rewards are very high, but at the same time it is good entertainment and promoting cricket in other countries is very good.

”Cricket is a religion in India and is huge and who knows the IPL may come to England and we will be promoting cricket and maybe it could be level with football one day.”
