Collingwood eager for IPL opportunity

England one-day captain Paul Collingwood is keen to play in the newly-formed Indian Premier League and hopes to be given the opportunity in the future.

England’s centrally-contracted stars are currently barred from playing in the IPL with Hampshire’s Dimitri Mascarenhas England’s only representative in the competition.

But Collingwood is excited by the prospect of pitting his wits in the sub-continent’s money-spinning showpiece and insists it could become a reality in years to come.

He said on Setanta Sports News: "There is a lot of money being bandied around and hopefully in the future we will get the opportunity to play in the IPL.”

The England skipper added: “I am sure people are going to be tempted.

“It is a massive competition and I think everybody is looking forward to see how it goes. It’s exciting and the whole world is looking at it. So from a player’s point of view, you are always going to be tempted.

“Possibly more English players will take part. At the moment we obviously cannot play in it, but I’m sure in the future there will opportunities so we can.”

Away from the furore being created by the IPL, Collingwood is looking forward to summer series against New Zealand and South Africa.

Collingwood added: “Winning 2-1 in New Zealand was obviously a great result, but there is still room for improvement.

“The big one this summer is definitely South Africa and that is going to be a really big test for us and a gauge of how far we have come this year.”

And despite losing the one-day series against New Zealand, Collingwood is equally optimistic about the 50-over game.

“We have definitely got the players, and we are making strides in the one-day form of the game. We lost 3-1 to New Zealand, but hopefully we can have a good result here early in the season.”
