IPL six hitting reaches new highs

If you thought the T-20 World Cup in South Africa was the highpoint of six-hitting, think again!.

For six-hitting just got bigger and better at the ongoing Indian Premier League.

We're just nine matches into the League and already a whopping 107 sixes have been smashed, with the Bangalorean-turned Mumbai Indian Robin Uthappa hitting the hundredth six of the series last night when he tonked the Chennai Superkings bowler Jacom Oram over the mid-on boundary in the fifth over.

The Mumbai Indians hit seven more hits over the fence in their chase of 209 runs and ironically fell short by just six runs of the total. Harbhajan Singh (3) also contributed to the sixes as did Shaun Pollock and Abhishek Nayar.

Brendon McCullum of New Zealand, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, smashed thirteen sixes in the first match of the League and equalled the record of most sixes in the T-20 held by his compatriot Craig McMillan. With McCullum scheduled to play at least 12 more matches, one cannot even fathom how many sixes he would end with.

Compared with these pyrotechnics, the T-20 World Cup held in South Africa seems tame enough. The tournament saw a total of 255 sixes being hit over 27 matches including the finals and semi-finals.

Of course, a key highlight was Yuvraj Singh taking six sixes in a over from the hapless Stuart Broad of England, thus making it the first ever time that six sixes were hit off the bowling of player from a test playing nation. While Sir Gary Sobers and Ravi shastri smashed six sixes in domestic / county cricket, Herschelle Gibbs of South Africa got them against an ICC associate member in the World Cup.

With just nine matches of the IPL completed and the score of sixes already crossing the hundred mark, we can safely say that by the time the IPL gets over, this number would definitely cross 300 and may be much more.
