Chargers post respectable total

A late onslaught from Rohit Sharma has helped the Deccan Chargers post a respectable total of 175/4 in their IPL match against the Kings XI Punjab at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium on Friday evening.

Sharma played some glorious strokes all around the wicket to give his team something to bowl at. Before the match Sharma was already the Chargers leading run-getter in the tournament and he wasted no time in showing the away fans what he is capable of. At times it appeared as if he was toying with the opposition bowlers. Sharma was eventually out for 50 off just 27 balls with three fours and four sixes, while trying to force the pace. VRV Singh the bowler to dismiss him.

The foundation for the Chargers’ total came from their opening batsmen Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs who put on 79 for the first wicket.

Gilchrist made his intentions clear early on, slashing the second ball of the match for four and he was always looking for quick singles. Gilchrist being Gilchrist the singles were also interspersed with some sparkling boundaries.

Gibbs began tentatively and played and missed on a few occasions but he got his first boundary due to some poor fielding but that slice of luck seemed to give him some much needed confidence. He then hit two legitimate fours off the next two balls he faced and suddenly he looked like a different player.

Just as it looked as if the crowd was about to witness a classic Gibbs innings the South African was bowled by Gagandeep Singh for a well played 44 off 34 balls with three fours and three sixes.

Gilchrist went to his 50 off 40 balls with six fours and a six. Unfortunately for the Australian he was out two balls later, bowled by Ramesh Powar.

Punjab’s spinners did a good job in taking the pace off the ball and they helped to curtail the Chargers batsmen just when they looked at their most dangerous.
