Spearman suffers fracture

Gloucestershire's season has taken another turn for the worse with the news that opening batsman Craig Spearman has suffered a fractured cheekbone that will require surgery.

Spearman was struck by a rising delivery from Johannes van der Wath in the defeat Twenty20 defeat to Northampton last night.

The ball managed to get lodged between the grille and peak of his helmet and after receiving treatment in the middle, the 35-year-old was taken from the field with blood pouring from his face.

"The ball got lodged in the metal grille (of his helmet) and did quite a bit of damage." explained Gloucestershire team mentor Jack Russell.

"He was very woozy and had to be laid out on the floor for at least an hour."

The former New Zealand batsman, who is in his benefit year, was taken to hospital last night and X-Rays confirmed the break and that surgery would be required.

Spearman will continue to be monitored and will have further tests on his eyes and vision in the next couple of days.

Vice Captain Alex Gidman is also set to miss the rest of the Twenty20 campaign with an ankle injury.
Gidman withdrew from the squad to play Northants last night and will be unable to play in the rest of the competition.

It is hoped that Gidman will be fit to return for the LV County Championship game against Warwickshire at the end of the month.

Cheltenham CC captain Jackson Thompson took Gidman's place in the side at Milton Keynes yesterday and seems set to continue as the Gladiators look for their fist win of the tournament at Glamorgan this evening.
Thompson is in fine form having scored two centuries in the last week.

He notched a hundred for the Gloucestershire second XI against Glamorgan last week and followed that up with 104 for Cheltenham in their win against Frocester at the weekend.

Kadeer Ali has suffered another injury blow and also seems set to miss the rest of the Twenty20 campaign.
Ali has recovered from the broken thumb that had kept him on the sidelines for most of the season, however he sprained his ankle in training over the weekend.
