Capel shrugs off favourites tag
Head coach David Capel has told on-song Northamptonshire Steelbacks they have achieved nothing yet in the Twenty20 Cup as they aim to make it five wins out of five against Warwickshire Bears at Milton Keynes tonight.
The Steelbacks have been on fire and are the new bookies' favourites to be overall winners, but Capel said: "Being made favourites certainly won't change our mindset – we are not looking at ourselves as anything special.
"The moment you stop evolving or stand still, then you will be beaten."
William Hill have slashed odds on David Capel's team to just 5/1 after their fantastic start to the campaign.
That makes them the punters' top choice for success just ahead of
Middlesex – the only other side with a 100 per cent record.
But, despite an excellent opening, Capel is demanding his players step up their standards by yet another notch.
"Winning is not enough," the head coach stated. "We have to look at the degree of winning and continue our pursuit of excellence.
"You never get bored of winning. But to ensure you keep having that success you have to make sure we always take our own game forward.
"Being made favourites certainly won't change our mindset but it will make everyone else even more determined to come along and knock us off our perch. That's why we have to keep raising our own bar."
Capel also admitted he is considering making a change to his side for tonight's match.
"We've not discounted the possibility of making a change or two," he added. "It is difficult with Jason (Brown) and Boj (Nicky Boje) playing so well but we would like to give Monty (Panesar) some cricket at some stage.
"The difficulty is trying to find the opportunity. We want him to be playing so he can gain some experience of Twenty20."
