Superstars to hot to handle for Rockets
Thanks to a fabulous knock of 46 runs by Russel Arnold that helped Chennai Superstars get the better of Ahmedabad Rockets by 35 runs in the ICL 20-20 Indian Championship here at the LB Stadium on Monday.
Rockets' captain Damien Martyn put the Superstars in to bat after winning the toss and to Rockets' delight both Ian Harvey and Jaikumar Hariesh got run out in the first two overs of the match with the scorecard reading a dismal 2-05.
But Ganapathi Vignesh and Arnold came to their team's rescue and shared a valuable 67-run partnership. Firing all cylinders, the duo sent the Rockets on a leather hunt.
It was Reetinder Sodhi who scalped the prized wicket of Vigesh for a well-made 38 off 29 balls, including 2 fours and three sixes. And soon the Rockets were back into the game with another quick wicket of that of Rajamani Jesuraj.
However, Arnold continued to smash the bowlers before getting out to Sodhi's ball in the last over for a superb 46 (38 b, 4X4, 1X6) to help the Superstars reach a competitive total of 135-5 in a 16 overs match.
Sodhi was the lone bowler who got wickets and finished with 2-25.
Chasing the traget, the Rockets' openers fell cheaply but skipper Damien Martyn and Sodhi put on 71 runs together to keep their team's chances bright.
And just when it looked as if Ahmedabad would be running away with the match, Sodhi got run out after scoring a quickfire 23 off 16 balls. To add to the Rockets woes, Martyn also fell in the same over off the bolwing of Rajamani Jesuraj for a well-made 52 off 38 balls, studded with 7 fours and a six.
Thereafter, the batting simply collapsed and Rockets could manage to reach 107-8, falling short by 35 runs in the end.
Shabbir Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with 3-20 in his alloted 4 overs, while Jesuraj (2-13) and Harvey (2-07) finished with two wickets each.
