Pietersen blames off-field issues for loss

England skipper Kevin Pietersen said his team has to learn from their mistakes fast and focus on the game if they are to succeed before next year’s $20 million match after England received a ten wicket drubbing on Saturday in Antigua.

"It was a real walloping. It started during the week. I think we haven’t been concentrating on our cricket. There has been a lot of nonsense that has happened this week and unfortunately I don’t think we have concentrated hard enough on our cricket. We need to learn fast from our mistakes to perform better in the future," Pietersen said in an interview to Sky Sports.

"The main focus should be to come in and play our games of cricket. I have just said to the lads that the thing we need to do for the next ten months is to concentrate solely on our cricket and leave everything else up to everyone else," he added.

"There has been everything that has gone on this week. In terms of what we have done, the cricket and the things around it, it has just been a week full of other things and the cricket has not been something we have concentrated solely on, which is what we have to focus on now – batting, bowling and fielding," he observed.

"We are going to have to buy into this a lot, lot more because it is hard to lose, I hate losing and it is hard to see them running around here (celebrating). But there are some very happy guys there who are not as fortunate as us so there are some positives for them," he added.

The biggest prize-money clash was overshadowed by Allen Stanford (the even paymaster) now infamous flirting with England players' wifes and girl friends resulting negative media coverage and the gag on players about their payments, though that was clearly the only goal at stake from an unofficial match as this.

Even as England’s players, who were totally ignored during the presentation cermony, the Stanford Superstars celebrated wildly, spraying champagne and plotting now they might spend their $1 million per man fee.

The Superstars, in contrast, spent six weeks together in a training camp preparing for the match with a social curfew in place. Hopefully, the West Indies, with this new found fame return to their past glory, where they ruled the cricket world 20 years ago.
