Ponting to be traded by the Knights
It's business time for Kolkata Knight Riders as they reportedly have Australian skipper Ricky Ponting lined up for sale in the upcoming IPL players' transfer and auction.
Ponting was all smiles on Wednesday after he led his side to victory in Sydney over South Africa. But his joy may prove to be short-lived as he could soon be up for trade by his IPL team.
But everything is not so simple as the Australian captain has to first agree to be transferred and while the Knight Riders are not confirming this news, they do admit that the cap of 10 international players per team with only four playing at a time has tied their hands. KKR already has 11 internationals on their rolls.
"The IPL has capped the players at 10. Which means that is as much maneuverability that any franschise has. We have already signed uncapped Moses Henrix. There is scope for one or two at best for us to get. So if we go to the auction, by definition they will be capped players. But not everyone is an expensive player, you may get a player who fits your budget," said Jeet Banerjee, KKR Associate.
The Knight Riders paid Rs 1.6 crore for Ponting who played only 4 games last season scoring just 39 runs. This year too he may not be available for most of the event if Australia agree to play Pakistan. In that case KKR would clearly want some money back so as to buy more utility players like Owais Shah at the next auction.
