Dolphins snatch last-ball victory
The Nashua Dolphins snatched a dramatic last-ball victory over the Nashua Cape Cobras in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at Kingsmead on Friday.
Chasing 120 to win the Dolphins began the last over of their innings, bowled by left-arm spinner Claude Henderson, needing ten runs for victory. The match came down to the last ball with the Dolphins requiring six to win which Johann Louw duly delivered as he hit a flat six back over the bowler’s head to take the Dolphins to 120 for seven.
Louw ended the match unbeaten on 28 off 15 balls with two sixes to secure the exciting win.
The Dolphins had looked dead in buried in the match as they struggled to 67 for six before Louw and Pierre de Bruyn put on an invaluable 37-run partnership for the seventh wicket which was broken when De Bruyn was trapped lbw by seamer Charl Langeveldt in the 19th over.
With only the tail to bat the Dolphins challenge looked to have ended before Louw’s heroics.
Langeveldt was the Cobras most successful bowler finishing with figures of two for 38.
Earlier, Yusuf Abdulla took three wickets as the Dolphins restricted the Cobras to 119 for eight.
The Cobras made a poor start to their innings as they slumped to 18 for four in four overs with all the dismissed batsmen guilty of playing extravagant shots on a pitch that was providing good bounce for the fast bowlers.
A 60-run fifth-wicket partnership between Richard Levi and Justin Ontong (27) then added an air of respectability to the Cobras’ innings before Ontong mistimed a shot off the part time spin of Ahmed Amla and was caught by Abdulla at long-on.
Ontong’s dismissal signalled another Cobras collapse as they lost four wickets for the addition of 25 runs.
Levi’s wickets was one of those to fall during the spell as he became Abdulla’s third wicket after he cut a delivery straight to Alfonso Thomas at point to be out for a career-best 46 off 47 balls.
Left-arm seamer Abdulla finished with figures of three for 23 while fast bowler Quinton Friend claimed two for 22.
There was a sickening moment during the Cobras innings when Friend collided with Imraan Khan after both men went for a catch at long-off. The collision saw Friend leave the field on a stretcher.
Friend was taken to hospital immediately suffering from a suspected concussion.
