Knight Riders release Shoaib Akhtar
Pakistan's injury-prone fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been released by his Indian Premier League team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Sources said that the KKR has released the Pakistani paceman and has paid him his dues.
Initially the KKR management wanted to sell the Akhtar, who played just four matches in the inaugural edition of the IPL last year, but no other franchise showed any interest in buying him.
It was believed that KKR's Australian coach, John Buchanan, is not in favour of retaining Akhtar who he thinks is injury prone. However former Indian captain and KKR skipper Sourav Ganguly thought that his team would lack a match winner if Akhtar was released. Akhtar's latest injury which required a knee surgery has sealed his IPL fate though. The fast bowler was not available for comment.
Pakistani players might not participate in the second edition of the IPL due to the tension between the two countries. Although Pakistan's sports ministry has cleared the players to feature in the IPL they might reconsider if the relationship does not get better in the coming weeks.
