Chargers winning streak continues
The Deccan Chargers beat the Chennai Super Kings by 6 wickets to win the 16th match of the second edition of the Indian Premier League at Kingsmead in Durban on Monday.
Powered by superb knocks from captain Adam Gilchrist and opener Herschelle Gibbs, Deccan chased down the victory target of 166 runs with 3 balls to spare.
Gibbs, who started in a brisk fashion, settled down to play the anchor role after the dismissal of Gilchrist. Gibbs remained unbeaten in his 69-run knock that came off 56 balls and was studded with 2 sixes and 6 fours. He was adjudged the Man of the Match.
With four wins out of four matches, Deccan are right up at the top of the points table.
Deccan Chargers were 85/2 in 10 overs in pursuit of 166.
Gilchrist and Gibbs gave Deccan a flying start with Gilchrist leading the onslaught hitting 3 sixes and 5 fours in his 44-run knock that came off just 19 balls. The blitzkrieg start saw Deccan hitting the fastest 50 in this IPL in just 3.3 overs.
It was Suresh Raina who dismissed Gilchrist in his first over by having him caught by Muttiah Muralitharan at short third man and in his next over had VVS Laxman (4) too caught at short third man by Jacob Oram.
Chennai Super Kings scored 165/6 in 20 overs.
The Chennai score was powered by Matthew Hayden and Jacob Oram, while Pragyan Ojha took 2 wickets for Deccan.
Hayden hit 8 fours in his 49-run knock that came off 35 balls.
Ojha put the brakes on the Chennai run flow by snapping Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Hayden in one over.
Dhoni hit to deep extra cover for Shoaib Ahmed to take the catch after hitting a six and a four in his run-a-ball 22.
Three deliveries later, Hayden flicked to mid-wicket for Rohit Sharma to take the catch. Hayden's 35-ball 49 was studded with 8 fours.
Chennai went to score 165 due to a late surge by Oram, who hit 2 sixes and 4 fours in his 41-run knock that came off 29 balls.
Chennai Super Kings were 88/2 in 10 overs.
Put in to bat, Chennai got off to a poor start losing Parthiv Patel on the second ball of the match caught down the leg side by Deccan captain Adam Gilchrist off Fidel Edwards.
Suresh Raina hit 2 sixes and and a four before giving a return catch to Rohit Sharma in the seventh over.
