Kings XI battle to win over Chargers

Brett Lee and Piyush Chawla held their nerves in the final over and guided the Kings XI Punjab to a 3-wicket victory over the Deccan Chargers at the De Beers Diamond Oval.

Punjab needed 8 runs off the last over as Lee and Chawla safely helped their side to the much-needed win with one ball to spare.

Punjab lost the momentum just before the strategy break when Yuvraj Singh (18) and Kumar Sangakkara fell in the space of one ball. Mahela Jayawardene (43) then played well and carried Kings XI hopes before being run out trying to steal the second run.

Shoaib Maqsusi struck twice in the 10th over to dismiss well-set Yuvraj and Sangakkara to jolt Kings XI Punjab. Sangakkara was bowled out trying to get too cheeky while Yuvraj got a thick top edge on the last ball of the 10th over to hand a simple catch to Adam Gilchrist.

Kings XI lost their openers Sunny Sohal (30) and Simon Katich (9) after a decent start against Deccan Chargers.

Rohit Sharma got straight into the action and dismissed Sohal and Katich in his first over. Both the openers got out attempting big shots over long on.

Earlier, some expensive hitting by Andrew Symonds (60*) propelled Deccan Chargers to 168/5 in 20 overs against sloppy Kings XI.

Andrew Symonds was particularly charged up against Sreesanth and scored 20 runs in the 17th over. Symonds struggled to time the ball initially but once in rhythm he was on rampage. He alongwith Venugopal Rao (32) added 95 runs for the fifth wicket.

Venugopal Rao hit some lusty shots for his 32 runs which included two hit over the fence and a four.

Chargers lost Adam Gilchrist (20), Herschelle Gibbs (13) and Tirumalsetti Suman (27) after a steady start against Kings XI Punjab.

Wilkin Mota dismissed Tirumalsetti Suman just before the strategy break to foil Chargers' surge. Suman batted beautifully for his 27 runs which included two six and a four. He was caught over long leg trying to go for the maximum by Mahela Jayawardene.

Herschelle Gibbs was done in by Piyush Chawla at the score of 13. Jayawardene took a stunning catch at the point.

S Sreesanth got rid of opener Adam Gilchrist for 20 runs, as Deccan Chargers lost their first wicket after a steady start against Kings XI. Adam Gilchrist hit three fours and a six in his 20-run innings before being caught out by Ramesh Powar at the long leg.

Rohit Sharma contributed 9 runs before becoming the first victim of pacer Brett Lee in the second edition of the IPL.

Yuvraj Singh won the toss and decided to bowl first against Deccan Chargers in the 36th Indian Premier League match.
