Pandey and Kallis fall early for Bangalore

Deccan Chargers made up for their mediocre performance with the bat by getting early breakthroughs in the form of Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey.

RP Singh started off dismissing the dangerous Kallis for 15 while Pragyan Ojha struck twice in two overs to pull back the Royal Bangalore Challengers run chase. He dismissed Manish Pandey off the very first delivery he bowled in the match and then returned send back Roelof van der Merwe who was going all guns blazing for 32 off 21 deliveries.

Earlier, it had looked like Anil Kumble’s day completely. Every time he brought himself on to bowl, he struck to break a partnership and put the pressure on the Chargers, finishing with an amazing figure of 4 for 16 off four overs.

Jumbo’s exploits with the ball saw Royal Bangalore Challengers restrict their opposition to 143 and put themselves in a comfortable position, unless they press the self destruct button.

Kumble had struck off the second delivery of the match when he dislodged Adam Gilchrist’s stumps to roll Bangalore’s campaign in style. Vinay Kumar supported Jumbo well and struck in his first over to dismiss Tirumalsetti Suman for 10. Bowling the last over, Kumar dismissed Azhar Bilakhia too.

The Bangalore skipper brought himself back in the ninth over to send back the ominous looking Andrew Symonds (33 off 21 balls) picking up his second wicket of the match. Symonds had looked liked Deccan’s saviour, as he took his team’s total past the 50 run mark in the 8th over but Kumble cut short his stint at the crease.

Though the other bowlers dried up the runs and boundaries for Deccan Chargers, none could break through the defence of the Men in Blue.

In the meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Herschelle Gibbs joined hands to put up a fifty run partnership for the fourth wicket and steady the Deccan ship to put up a respectable total for RCB to chase. Gibbs played the anchor role and brought up his half century to save Deccan some pride.

However, just when the duo looked like taking the game away from the Men in Red, the champion bowler that he is, Anil Kumble put his hand up and struck twice in his last over dismissing the dangerous looking Rohit Sharma and Venugopal Rao.

Earlier, in the mega finale of the DLF IPL 2009, Bangalore Royal Challengers captain Anil Kumble won the first battle at the toss and decided to put Deccan Chargers in to bat.
