Gladiators end Sabres winning run

Gloucestershire pulled off their first Twenty20 Cup win of 2009 at the third attempt with a 21-run over previously unbeaten Somerset at Taunton.

Craig Spearman top scored with 51 in 29 balls as the Gladiators won the toss before piling up 162-8.

The Sabres looked favourites at halfway, but Steve Kirby claimed the early wickets of Craig Kieswetter and Marcus Trescothick.

And the spinners tied down the middle order and Somerset closed on 141-5.

Home supporters in a near sell-out crowd at Taunton had precious little to cheer as Gloucestershire fielded better and bowled a better line and length.

It took some lusty blows from Peter Trego (44 not out) at the death to even get the Sabres close - and even he was dropped on 1 by wicketkeeper Steve Adshead.

After being reduced to 59-4, Trego joined captain Justin Langer to share 37 for the fifth wicket.

Trego then took up the assault when Langer fell for 33, but his 32-ball 44, including three sixes, was not enough as the hosts fell short on 141-5.
