England stun shell shocked India

England stuck to their game plan and delivered a knock out blow to send the T20 World Cup Champions crashing out of the Super Eights thanks to a 3 run victory at Lords.

In a shocking outcome of the match at Lordís, India, the defending champions of the T20 World Cup, were sent crashing home by England in a cliffhanger.

A fabulous bowling performance by the English cricket team, Graeme Swann and Ryan Sidebottom in particular, took the Poms home making them the winners by 3 runs.

Even a half century partnership between MS Dhoni (30 off 20) and Yusuf Pathan (33 off 17) for the sixth wicket could not change the fate of the Indians as they fell short by 3 runs.

Graeme Swann and Ryan Sidebottom shared two wickets each to set the match for England. Sidebottom was declared the man of the match for his 2-31 off four overs.

Chasing a modest 154 to keep their hopes alive in the tournament, India had lost Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina in no time to Ryan Sidebottom. They had lost momentum then and there and the rate of scoring fell. Mascarenhas returned to dismiss Gambhir to spell more trouble for the defending champs.

The turning point of the match came when James Foster displayed magic by stumping Yuvraj. He whipped the bails in a flash after the ball missed Yuvrajís ferocious looking blade. That was soon after the spinner had sent back Ravindra Jadeja who despite repeated attempts, failed to up the tempo of the Indian innings.

For England, Kevin Pietersen had lambasted the Indian bowlers, taking them to the cleaners all around the park. Ravi Bopara provided him ample support with a quick 37.

India had started the tournament as favourites to retain the title but the T20 world champions could not register wins against any teams apart from Ireland and Bangladesh, both tagged minnows.

Coming into the Super 8 stage, the champions of the inaugural edition were beaten by West Indies in their first encounter to put them in a do-or-die situation against England where they failed to take the exit route from the tournament!
