Somerset fear Twenty20 bowl out

Somerset will ask the England and Wales Cricket Board for an unprecedented second reserve day if tonight's attempt to play their Twenty20 Cup quarter-final against Lancashire is rained off.

The Sabres were due to face the Lightning at Old Trafford last night but persistent rain in made play impossible.

The teams will reconvene at 5.30pm today but the forecast is very poor and the regulations state a bowl-out should decide the semi-finalists if play is impossible for two days.

But Somerset CCC feel such a prestige match should not be decided by a lottery.

Director of cricket Brian Rose said: "If the weather is poor again on Wednesday we will make representations to play on Thursday at 11am, because we need to get back to Taunton ahead of Friday's Championship game with Nottinghamshire."

Only one previous Twenty20 bowl-out has happened Surrey beat Warwickshire in 2005. The format involves five players from each side bowling two balls each at unguarded stumps.
