Steelbacks amining to break Twenty20 streak

David Capel is confident Northants can overcome a Twenty20 hoodoo to take glory in this weekend's finals day.

The Steelbacks play Sussex Sharks in the opening semi-final on Saturday. But only once in the previous six competitions have the winners of the day's first game gone on to take the crown. That happened when Leicestershire triumphed in 2006.

But Capel is sure his men will be able to repeat the success of their county neighbours and has plans in place to ensure they are in the right condition.

"There are pros and cons with both," the Steelbacks head coach said. "If you win through from the second semi-final there might be a kind of euphoria that can carry you through. You may be tired but you will still be on a high. But I don't think it matters either way."

"I'm certainly not looking at it as a disadvantage. It means if we get through then we get a rest between games. We've looked at this and thought about how to prepare. We have taken into account what other sides have done in previous years in terms of preparation."

"We'll probably go back to the hotel, have a relax and the lads can have a massage or something. We'll watch the other game on the television and then go back to the ground to prepare properly for the final. If you win the first game and then have to hang around for the final it makes it a very long day."

"It has all been worked out and we've got some experienced guys in our side who know who to look after themselves and make sure they are in the right frame of mind and body for a big game. If we're in the final we know we will have time off the pitch and will have to get back into it later on. But I'm confident we can do that."
