IPL expansion to be discussed by council

The Indian Premier League governing council will discuss plans to expand the IPL by creating another two franchises at a meeting in Mumbai in December.

The plans, if agreed, will see the IPL expand by two teams in 2011 creating a ten team league. The plans have been discussed at a number of governing council meetings during the last 12 months but it is believed a final decision will be made on Thursday, December 17th.

The plans were given formal backing by the IPL teams at a franchisees' workshop in Bangkok last month. The plans for expansion were agreed with a 7-1 majority. The only team who didn't back the expansion were the Chennia Super Kings.

The expansion will see the number of matches played in the IPL increase by 35 to a total of 94 matches.
