Hampshire Hawks sign Afridi for T20

The Hampshire Hawks have signed Pakistan all rounder Shahid Afridi for this summers Friends Provident T20 tournament which take place in June.

Afridi, the current Pakistan Twenty20 captain will join the Hawks as one of their overseas players in the new Twenty20 competition which replaces the Twenty20 Cup.

The 29 year old is one of a new breed of freelance cricketers who are wanted by domestic teams all over the world as teams start to chase the money involved in Twenty20 cricket.

Afridi played for the Deccan Chargers in the inaugural Indian Premier League in 2008 and because Pakistan's players were banned from last years event he will take part in the next player auction later this month where he is expected to be signed up by a IPL franchise.

He is currently playing for the West End Redbacks in the KFC Big Bash in Australia and has helped his state team win their first three games of the season.

The Hawks cricket manager Giles White was excited by the signing of Afridi . "He's done it before in World Cups and he's doing it right now for South Australia," he said to BBC Radio Solent.

"We're hopeful he'll perform well and he'll turn out to be a good signing."

"He's a good fielder, as well as giving us a bit of firepower with the bat. With the ball he's got a good strike rate, doesn't go for too many either; his economy is good. said White.

"Hopefully he'll form a good partnership with Ajantha (Mendis) and it will help us perform well in the competition" he added.
