Aces reach final despite losing thriller
The Auckland Aces reached the final of this years HRV Cup despite losing a thrilling game against the Otago Volts at Colin Maiden Park in Auckland.
With both teams ending the group stages of this years event level on points the Aces claimed that vital second place thanks to a much superior run rate.
The drama was building throughout the game and reached its peak with the Volts needing 13 runs from the last 4 balls with only one wicket in hand.
Nick Beard smashed 2 fours off the first two balls and took a single leaving Derek de Boorder on strike with the Volts needing to score a boundary to tie the game. de Boorder held his nerve smashing the ball into the boundary to cap an extraordinary game.
Brendon McCullum came to the crease in the super over for the Volts and he smashed 13 runs off Daryl Tuffey's over which included two fours.
In reply the Aces Colin de Grandhomme was bowled first ball by Yasir Arafat before Martin Guptill and Scott Styris failed to find the bounday to leave the Volts winners by 6 runs.
