Injury forces Graeme Smith out of IPL

After losing their first two games the Rajasthan Royals have been dealt a massive blow losing opening batsman Graeme Smith for the rest of the IPL through injury.

The South African fractured his right middle finger while fielding during the Royals 7 wicket defeat against the Delhi DareDevils on Monday night in Ahmedabad.

Smith injured his finger after he pulled of a stunning diving catch to end Virender Sehwag’s brilliant innings of 75 hooking his finger in the ground when he landed.

Smith announced the news via twitter saying "I have a double fracture in my right middle finger, so will be missing the IPL. I hurt it taking the catch off Sehwag last night, when I landed my finger got hooked in the ground,” he said.

"Going to miss the Royals and India and all the fans! Going to try to get fit for the Twenty20 World Cup with South Africa," he added.

The lost of Smith will be a devastating blow to the Royals hopes of reaching the knock out Stages of the IPL after already suffering two defeats.

With Shane Watson not expected to arrive in India until the start of April Royals skipper Shane Warne will have to call up Hampshire's Michael Lumb or Australian pair Damien Martyn and Adam Voges to fill Smiths shoes.
