Sublime Hayden eases Super Kings to victory
Matthew Hayden smashed a brutal half century to help the Chennai Super Kings cruise to a 5 wicket victory over the Delhi DareDevils to win their second game in a row.
The Australian’s innings of 93 from just 43 balls included 9 fours and 7 sixes as Hayden attacked the DareDevils bowlers with ease before he was brilliantly caught by Tillakaratne Dilshan just 7 short of a deserved century.
Hayden’s match winning contribution overshadowed a fine innings from Virender Sehwag who thrilled the crowds with another masterful batting display to help the DareDevils set the Super Kings a big run chase of 186 at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
Sehwag was the star of the DareDevils innings; his contribution of 74 runs from just 38 balls put the home side into a great position after they had lost David Warner in just the third over of the day.
With opening partner Gautam Gambhir missing through injury Sehwag took on the responsibility of building a strong innings helping the DareDevils reach 100 from just 11 overs.
His second wicket partnership of 67 with Dilshan (15) had put the DareDevils into a strong position but the dismissal of the Sri Lankan sparked a mini batting collapse with Sehwag and AB de Villiers (2) soon following to leave the home side 107-4.
After losing three quick wickets stand in skipper Dinesh Karthik (19) and Mithun Manhas started to rebuild the DareDevils stuttering innings with a partnership of 39 to make sure Sehwag’s contribution would not go to waste.
Karthik’s dismissal brought Rajat Bhatia (21) to the crease for a cameo appearance to help the DareDevils reach 185-6 although they will be disappointed not to have made the visitors chase a higher total after Sehwag’s great start.
The Super Kings run chase got of to a great start thanks to Hayden. After suffering two disappointing outings in his previous two games the former Australian test cricketer made amends by smashing Rajat Bhatia into the stands for a huge six to set the tone for his innings.
No bowler was safe from Hayden’s blitz. Bhatia conceded 18 runs in the 4th over while Dilshan was smashed for 20 runs in the 7th over as Hayden raced past his first half century in this years IPL.
Hayden’s stunning innings was ended by Dilshan who pulled off a brilliant one handed diving catch at long off to give the DareDevils a chance of claiming victory.
The Super Kings lost Albie Morkel (0) and Justin Kemp (4) cheaply to leave the visitors 169-5 but Suresh Raina (49) and Murali Vijay (12) held their nerve with a partnership of 21 to claim the victory.
