Sahara celebrates after winning Pune franchise

The Sahara Adventure Sports group is celebrating today after winning one of the two new Indian Premier League franchises which will join the tournament in 2011.

The group placed three identical bids of $370 million for the Pune, Ahmedabad and Nagpur franchises. Their bid was the highest received by the BCCI allowing Sahara to choose their preferred location.

Pune was selected because of its close proximity to Mumbai and the number of blue chip companies that are based in the city.

"Sahara is the biggest patron of sports in the country and we have been associated with the BCCI family for the last 15 years. So when we came to know about this proposition of cricket with business, we bid for IPL," said Sahara spokesman Abhijit Sarkar.

"We considered the logistics and infrastructure of the cities. It is a thing of great pride for us that now we are a part of IPL family," he said.

"The IPL is undoubtedly the most ground breaking international sports development in living memory. There is no precedent for what has been achieved by Mr. Lalit Modi and the BCCI over the last three years and the Sahara group is immensely proud to have won the Invitation to Tender from Pune."

"I can promise the people of Pune – a team they will be proud of in next year’s IPL 2011. I would like to thank Mr. Modi and the BCCI-IPL for running a very transparent process to allocate the Franchises. All of us within Sahara Adventure Sports just cannot wait for IPL 2011 to commence," he added.
