Glamorgan captain Robert Croft has promised a different outcome this season when the Dragons start their Twenty20 campaign tonight at Northants. The Dragons won only one of their five matches in the inaugural season of the competition last season as they struggled to adapt to the shorter version of the game.

Glamorgan are riding high at the moment at they lie in second place in Division Two of the championship and top the totesport League Division one table. Croft is looking to transfer Glamorgan's successful start in championship and one-day cricket on to the Twenty20 stage. "We were disappointed by our performances last season and we are not in the habit of giving up trophies easily," said Croft.

"The poor performances last season hit us hard and confidence was dented. But the guys have had a year's experience and it is important that whatever happens in the Twenty20 does not affect us in the 45-over game. If it does then it is weakness from the players and I won't accept it."

"We have got to sit down and look at how we are going to approach the competition. You might see a change in the batting for Twenty20 and I might drop down the order. I like to give our best batsmen like Matthew Maynard and Mike Powell the chance to bat in 20 overs, and Ian Thomas will also come into the equation as an opener."

Croft admitted that the Twenty20 game was a difficult test for bowlers. "Bowling is a bit of a lottery and the skilful artists will shine through," said the former England off-spinner. You have to be flexible and inventive and show different variations because batsmen do tend to line you up. It seems the bar is raised every year."

Glamorgan start their campaign tonight at Northampton before travelling to Somerset next Monday. The two home matches will be held at Sophia Gardens against Warwickshire and Gloucestershire on July 8 and 14 before the Dragons finish their group at Worcestershire on July 15.
