Sabres collapse hands victory to Eagles

The Essex Eagles held on to record a impressive 10 run victory over the Somerset Sabres despite Marcus Trescothick and Nick Comptonís 99 run opening partnership.

Faced with a total of just 178 to win on another good batting track at the County Ground in Taunton the home side got off to a good start thanks to Trescothick and Nick Compton.

The pair produced an opening stand of 99 from just 66 balls to put the home side in control even after Trescothick (40) was dismissed by Ravi Bopara.

Despite the lost of the Sabres skipper the homs side were still in complete control thanks to a cameo innings of 21 from Kieron Pollard who smashed 3 huge sixes off the bowling of Danish Kaneria in the 12th over,

Danish Kaneria responded to the pressure by bowling Pollard to halt the West Indies brutal blitz much to the disappointing of another good crowd at the County Ground.

With an easy win still insight the Sabres lost opener Compton (74) and when the middle order failed to fire it left the Eagles heading for a surprise victory.

Earlier having won the toss the Eagles decided to bat first and even though they lost Alistair Cook (18) early on Ravi Bopara and Matt Walker got the visitors off to a good start before Bopara (10) was dismissed by Alfonso Thomas at the start of the 5th over.

ten Doeschate shared vital partnerships with Matt Walker (35) and Scott Styris (27) before the batsman had to retire with a calf strain two runs short of a well deserved half century.

Having set off to take a quick single in the 15th over ten Doeschate stumble to the ground in a great deal of pain, after receiving treatment out on the pitch ten Doeschate limped off.

With ten Doeschate out of the attack Grant Flower (13) added some vital runs to help the Eagles reach 177-7 which might by hard to defend without their influential all-rounder.
