Australia has rested wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist and fast bowlers Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee, leaving the star trio out of its squad for the KFC international Twenty20 match against South Africa at the Gabba next Monday.
New South Wales wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will wear the gloves in Gilchrist's absence, while batting sensation Michael Hussey has been appointed vice-captain.
"Michael Hussey has been named vice-captain of the team and this is certainly a feather in his cap. He has done an excellent job in the one-day format, and we have every confidence that he has the necessary ingredients to take on this additional responsibility," said National Selection Panel chairman Trevor Hohns.
Skipper Ricky Ponting and all-rounder Andrew Symonds are the only two players from the Test XI in Sydney in the squad, with recent Test discards Simon Katich, Michael Clarke and Damien Martyn all selected.
Hohns said Twenty20 was still a bit of an unknown, but selectors had aimed to keep as much of the one-day squad together as possible.
"Having said that, Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist have not been selected in order to enable each of them to freshen up before the VB Series. Brett, Glenn and Adam have worked particularly hard during the Melbourne and Sydney Test matches; and we want to manage each of their respective workloads carefully."
