Steelbacks keep quarter finals hopes alive

The Northamptonshire Steelbacks kept alive their chances of reaching the Friends Provident t20 quarter finals thanks to a 11 run victory over the Lancashire Lightning.

The home side went into the game knowing they had to win their remaining three games to secure a place in the knock out stages and they produced a fine display in the field to complete a impressive victory.

Having been put into bat by the Lightning the home side got of to a good start with Chaminda Vaas (29) and Rob White (80) sharing an opening stand of 77 before Vass was dismissed by Stephen Perry in the 11th over.

With Vaas gone White went on the offensive with David Sales (21) and Alex Wakley (20) offering support. White’s inning was finally ended by Sajid Mahmood in the 16th over but Eric Chigumbura (20) and Andrew Hall (11) shared a 5th wicket partnership of 25 to help the home side reach 170-4.

With a total of 171 needed for victory the Lightning got off to a poor start losing big hitting opener Stephen Moore (9) at the start of the second over. Tom Smith (16) and Steven Croft (24) quickly followed to leave the visitors 56-3.

Paul Horton (25) and Mark Chilton (7) quickly followed as the Lightning lost wickets at regular intervals to slip to defeat.
