Guyana falters to hand advantage to Lions

Ethan O’Reilly picked up four wickets as the Highveld Lions restricted Guyana to a total of just 148-9 to keep their hopes of reaching the knock out stages of the Twenty20 Champions League alive.

Having been put into bat Guyana started off encouragingly thanks to Travis Dowlin who got the West Indies Twenty20 Champions innings off to a perfect start scoring 7 runs including a boundary off the bowling of Robert Frylinck.

Having taken a single off the final ball of the first over Dowlin was on strike to face O’Reilly who was fortunate to pick up a wicket with his first delivery of the innings when he trapped Dowlin (7) LBW.

Although reply’s showed the delivery would have missed leg stump the decision stood and a disappointed Dowling trudge off the field.

Despite the unfortunate decision Guyana didn’t dwell too much as skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan (21) made up for a disappointing tournament with the bat so far as he showed glimpses of his talent dispatching 4 boundaries during his time at the crease.

His innings would have been much longer had it not been for a stunning catch by Jean Symes who took a diving catch at point after the Guyana skipper attempted to square drive a delivery from Craig Alexander to leave the Caribbean side 32-2.

Opener Sewnarine Chattergoon (4) quickly followed after a strange innings which only lasted 3 deliveries but somehow lasted 30 minutes before he picked out Richard Caneron at mid-on with a tame miss-cue off the bowling of O’Reilly.

After the urgency displayed by Sarwan, Christopher Barnwell and Steven Jacobs struggled to score despite building a vital partnership of 37. The pair enjoyed a quick start to their partnership but as the runs dried up they could only find the boundary three times during the final 30 deliveries they faced together.

With the pressure mounting Jacobs foolishly called for a quick single despite hitting the ball straight to Alviro Petersen at extra cover who had time to throw the ball to strikers end to run out Barnwell (11).

With the break through made the Lions increased the pressure with two more wickets in the 14th over removing Jacobs (34) and Esuan Crandon (3) who became the second player to be needlessly run out to leave Guyana 88-6.

Having lost two quick wickets Royston Crandon and Jonathan Foo meet at the crease with only 6 overs remaining but the pair halted Guyana’s slump with a 7th wicket partnership of 27 before Crandon’s (15) middle stump was flattened by O’Reilly at the start of the 17th over.

O’Reilly then picked up his 4th wicket of the innings 3 deliveries later when he demolished Foo’s (19) off stump to end his spell with career best figures of 4-27.

Despite the double break through the Lions were unable to close out the inning thanks to Lennox Crush who swung his bat at everything to score an entertaining 19 to help Guyana reach 148-9.
