Aces hold on to beat the Firebirds

The Auckland Aces held on to record their 4th victory in this years HRV Twenty20 Cup thanks to a narrow 2 run victory over the Wellington Firebirds at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Batting first in a rain shorted 12 over innings the Aces reached 125-5 thanks to openers Colin de Grandhomme (28) and Jimmy Adams (32) who lead the way with the bat.

Anaru Kitchen (20) and Colin Munro (25) added valuable runs before a middle order collapse left the Firebirds with a run chase of 126 from 12 overs.

Despite losing Jessie Ryder (13) and James Franklin (12) early on the Firebirds remained in contention thanks to a 3rd wicket partnership of 67 between Neal Parlane (40) and Grant Elliott (42).

With victory in site Parlane was run out by Lou Vincent to leave the Firebirds needing another 18 runs from 13 balls.

Chris Nevin (8) and Stewart Rhodes (0) quickly followed to set up a thrilling finish which saw the home side come up just short.
