Volts slump to fifth straight Twenty20 defeat
The Otago Volts slumped to their fifth straight HRV Twenty20 Cup defeat after the Canterbury Wizards cruised to a 6 wicket victory at the Queen Elizabeth II Park in Christchurch.
Having set the Wizards a victory target of 169 the Volts would have felt confident of breaking their four game losing streak but not for the first time this year their bowlers were unable to defend a competitive total.
Rob Nicol lead the run chase with a 54 ball 75 before the Volts struck back to leave the Wizards 92-3 thanks to two quick wickets from Nick Beard.
With the tension mounting Dutchman Ryan ten Doeschate seal the victory for the home side thanks to a quick fire 45 from just 25 balls which included 2 fours and 3 sixes.
Having been put into bat the Volts got off to a good start thanks to Brendon McCullum (21) and Aaron Redmond (55) before a middle order collapse left the visitors in need of some major heroics from Ian Butler who smashed 5 sixes to end the innings 46 not out to help the Volts reach 168-7.
