Knight Riders cruise to victory over Chargers
The Kolkata Knight Riders cruised to a comprehensive 20 run victory over the Deccan Chargers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Yusuf Pathan and Manoj Tiwary led the way with a 4th wicket stand of 80 to help the Knight Riders set the Chargers a run chase of 170.
The pair came together in the 12th over and proceeded to torment the Chargers bowling attack, taking just 33 deliveries to record a fifty partnership to give the Knight Riders the momentum.
Pathan (47) was at his destructive best dispatching 2 fours and 3 sixes after he was dropped by Daniel Christian and Amit Mishra early in his innings.
Tiwary (33) followed Pathanís lead as the pair smashed 64 runs off the last 5 overs of the innings to help set the Chargers a tricky run chase.
Faced with a big run chase the Chargers got off to a positive start thanks to Sunny Sohal and Shikhar Dhawan who shared an opening stand of 41 for the home side.
The partnership was broken however by Iqbal Abdulla in the 6th over when Sohal (26) was caught by Eoin Morgan at cover point, the spinner struck again two deliveries later to remove Kumar Sangakkara (0) to leave the Chargers 41-2.
With the pressure mounting Cameron White (13) and Daniel Christian (1) quickly followed, Christian in particular was unlucky to be given out LBW after he got a big inside edge on a delivery from Rajat Bhatia in the 11th over.
Shikhar Dhawan (53) kept the Chargers hopes of winning the match alive with his first half century in this yearís tournament but the home side lost wickets at regular intervals to slip to their 6th defeat.
The innings got off to a dramatic start when Eoin Morgan was almost run out from the first delivery of the game after he attempted a risky second run.
Having completed an easy single Morgan turned back for a second and made it home just in time before Kumar Sanhakkara took the bails off after some quick fielding by Dale Styen at point.
Having survived the run out chance Morgan (14) could only add 12 more runs before Christian removed his leg stump at the start of the 6th over.
Despite the early loss, Jacques Kallis and Gautam Gambhir quickly established a 2nd wicket partnership of 43 before the home side struck back to remove the pair within the space of 5 deliveries.
Kallis (30) was the first to go when lofted a delivery from Amit Mishra to Dwaraka Ravi Teja on the long off boundary at the end of the 11th over before Pragyan Ojha ended Gambhirís (35) innings in the next over to leave the visitors 84-3.
Having made the break through the Chargers failed to increase the pressure on the Knight Riders after they handed Pathan two extra lives to give the visitors the momentum going into the Chargers run chase.
