Rafiq seals tense Roses victory for Yorkshire
Azeem Rafiq scored two boundaries in the final over to help Yorkshire Carnegie seal a two wicket victory over the Lancashire Lightning at Old Trafford in Manchester.
The visitors went into the final over needing 10 runs to seal victory in a tense game which surprisingly went down to the wire despite Yorkshire needing just 123 runs.
Rafiq and Ryan Sidebottom held their nerve during a 9th wicket stand of 15 to record the win after Yorkshire’s lower order slumped in dramatic fashion which set up a tense finish.
Faced with a small run chase, Adam Lyth (28) and Anthony McGrath (28) put the visitors on top before Luke Procter picked up three quick wickets to leave Yorkshire 96-6.
Adam Pyrah (6) and Adil Rashid (9) quickly followed after they were both run out to leave Rafiq and Sidebottom out in the middle to seal a tense Roses victory.
Having batted first the Lightning recorded a total of 122-6 thanks to Karl Brown (34) and Luke Procter (25) who shared a 7th wicket stand of 60 after the home side had been reduced to a total of just 62-6.
Rafiq (15-3) and Rashid (29-2) led the way as the visitors took control of the game after Gale had won the toss and put the Lightning into bat in front of a packed crowd at Old Trafford.
