Five star Rayner leads Sharks to victory

Ollie Raynor picked up five wickets to help the Somerset Sabres complete a thrilling four wicket victory over an under performing Somerset Sabres at the County Ground in Hove.

The 25 year old, who was only playing because of Michael Yardy’s absence, impressed with ball to help the Sharks restrict the Sabres to a total of just 90 after the visitors had been bowled out at the start of the 18th over.

Raynor tore through the Sabres middle order after he had dismissed Marcus Trescothick (33) in the 7th over thanks to Luke Wright who pulled off an excellent catch out on the boundary to remove the Sabres danger man.

Having won the toss, the Sharks got off to the perfect start thanks to Chris Liddle who removed Craig Kieswetter (3) and Peter Trego (0) in the 4th over to leave the Sabres 18-2.

With Trescothick back in the dug out the Sharks increased their advantage thanks to Raynor who removed Roelof van der Merwe (14), James Hildreth (0), Jos Butler (4) and Arul Suppiah (0) in quick sucsaession to leave the visitors 56-7 at the end of the 11th over.

Craig Meschede (10) and Murali Kartik (19) held up the Sharks charge with a 8th wicket stand of 20 but Naved-ul-Hasan soon wrapped up the tail after Luke Wright had bowled Kartik to leave the home side facing a run chase of 91.

Faced with a relatively simple run chase the Sharks struggled to get going, losing Chris Nash (4) and Joe Gatting (2) inside the opening 4 overs thanks to Gemaal Hussain and Steve Kirby.

Luke Wright (16) and Lou Vincent (16) quickly followed before stand in skipper Murray Goodwin and Andy Hobbs steadied the home side’s nerves with a 5th wicket stand of 22 before Hobbs (10) was dismissed by Kirby in the 16th over.

With the tension mounting Goodwin (26) was caught by Kieswetter off the bowling of van der Merwe soon after but the Sharks remained calm as Naved-ul-Hasan and Raynor scored the five runs needed to complete victory with just over two overs to spare.
