Sharks make light work of the Panthers

The Sussex Sharks cruised to a 49 run victory over the Middlesex Panthers in a one sided Friends Life t20 clash at Lords to leapfrog above the Hampshire Royals into first place in the Southern group.

Having set the Panthers a victory target of 166, the Sharks successfully restricted the home side to a total of just 116 as they slipped to their 5th defeat in the tournament.

The Panthers run chase got off to the worst possible start after they had been reduced to just 41-4 before Scott Newman and Jamie Dalrymple offered the home side hope with a 5th wicket stand of 64.

With the run rate increasing and overs running out Dalrymple (28) was bowled by Naved-ul-Hasan before Newman (44) was dismissed by Chris Liddle (20-4) in the penultimate over as the Panthers slipped to defeat.

Having been put into bat, the Sharks suffered a torrid start, losing Chris Nash (0) and Joe Gatting (0) inside the opening two overs to leave the visitors 2-2 after just 10 deliveries.

Despite the set back Lou Vincent and Luke Wright shared a 3rd wicket stand of 70, to led the Sharks comeback before Tom Smith broke the partnership after he bowled Wright (34) at the start of the 9th over.

Vincent (44) quickly followed before stand in skipper Murray Goodwin (48) and Naved-ul-Hasan steered the visitors to a total of 165-8 after a quick fire partnership of 37 before Goodwin was bowled by Ryan McLaren in the penultimate over.
