Hildreth helps Sabres complete easy victory
A half century from James Hildreth helped the Somerset Sabres complete a 38 run victory over the Surrey Lions to strengthen their chances of securing a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter finals.
Marcus Trescothick (35) and Peter Trego (27) got the Sabres inning off to a rapid start and although Hildreth held the innings together the Sabres lost wickets at regular intervals which saw them slip from 109-1 in the 13th over to record a total of just 169-7.
Hildreth (58) brought up his half century in just 42 balls which included four boundaries before he was dismissed by Yasir Arafat in the penultimate over as the Lions fought their way back into the game.
Despite losing skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown (1) in the 3rd over the Lions got off to a bright start thanks to Steve Davies (22) and Jason Roy (32) who shared a 2nd wicket stand of 29 to help the home side reach 42-1 at the end of the power play overs.
Having got off to a good start the Lions run chase was derailed by Max Waller (21-2) and Arul Suppiah (22-3) who tore through the Lions middle order to reduce them to just 73-6 at the end of the 13th over.
With the pressure mounting the Lions lower order were unable to fight back as the Sabres eased to victory after restricting the home side to a total of just 131-8.
The victory moves the Sabres four points clear of the 5th place Essex Eagles as the race for a place in the quarter finals heats up as the group stages reach a climax over the next two weeks.
