Impressive Hales leads Outlaws to victory
A half century from Alex Hales helped the Nottinghamshire Outlaws seal a five wicket victory over the Derbyshire Falcons to strengthen their chances of securing a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter finals.
The Northern group leaders cruised to their 8th victory despite having to chase down a victory total of 171 after Martin Guptill smashed 79 runs from just 55 balls to help the home side record a total of 170-5.
The Kiwi smashed seven boundaries and two sixes to get the Falcons innings off to a rapid start after the early loss of Wes Durston (1) and Chesney Hughes (4) inside the opening five overs.
Faced with a tough run chase, the Outlaws lost Tamin Iqbal (8) and Adam Voges (5) earlier on before Hales (76) and Samit Patel (70) shared a 3rd wicket stand of 105 runs to put the Outlaws in control before Hales was bowled by Jonathan Clare in the 16th over.
With another 38 runs needed from 24 balls the visitors lost Riki Wessels (3) and Chris Read (1) in quick succession before Patel and Steven Mullaney (8) saw the Outlaws home with a 6th wicket stand of 40.
