Pettini and Bopara blitz sinks the Sabres
Mark Pettini and Ravi Bopara were in devastating form with the bat to help the Essex Eagles record a 65 run victory over the Somerset Sabres at the Recreation Ground in Bath.
Pettini (81) and Bopara (72) both scored quick fire half centuries to help the Eagles record a total of 209-5 thanks to a 4th wicket stand of 108 after the visitors had been reduced to 66-3 in the 7th over.
Having been set a victory target of 210 the Sabres got off to the worst possible start, losing skipper Marcus Trescothick (1) at the start of the 3rd over after he was bowled by Tim Phillips.
Craig Mechede (2) quickly followed and although Jos Butler (31) and Kieron Pollard (21) offered some resistantís, Phillips (22-4), David Masters (25-2) and Ryan ten Doeschate (18-3) ripped through the Sabres middle order to restrict the hosts to a total of just 144.
The foundations of the victory were laid down by Pettini who took full advantage of the small boundaries, dispatching eight boundaries and three sixes to get the Eagles innings off to the perfect start.
Bopara increased the Eagles advantage, smashing 72 runs from just 42 deliveries to help the visitors record a vital victory as the race for a place in the Friends Life t20 quarters finals heats up in the Southern group.
