Spitfires battle the elements to record victory
The Kent Spitfires strengthened their hopes of securing a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter finals thanks to a seven wicket Duckworth Lewis victory over the Gloucestershire Gladiators.
Sam Northeast (11) and Darren Stevens (8) steered the Spitfires to victory thanks to a 4th wicket stand of 18 to help the visitors reach their Duckworth Lewis target of 76 with just five deliveries to spare.
Having restricted the Gladiators to a total of just 115-4 from their 16 overs, the Spitfires got off to a good start despite the loss of Robert Key (10) in the 2nd over thanks to Joe Denly (23) and Azhar Mahmood (20) who shared a 2nd wicket stand of 47.
With rain falling intermittently the Spitfires lost their momentum after Denly and Mahmood were dismissed in quick succession before Northeast and Stevens saw the visitors home in a tense finish.
Having waited for over an hour to start the game because of heavy rain, the Gladiators were indebted to Kevin O’Brien who scored 43 from just 24 deliveries which included three boundaries and three sixes to help set the Spitfires a victory target of 116.
Having lost Hamish Marshall (0) and Jack Taylor (4) inside the opening 2 overs the Gladiators seemed in deep trouble before Ian Cockbain (32) and Kane Williamson (20) led the recover which was finished in style by O’Brien.
