Morgan and Bopara seal six wicket victory
A 3rd wicket stand of 73 between Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara was enough to help England seal a six wicket victory over India with three balls spare in a action packed game at Old Trafford.
Having restricted India to a total of 165, England cruised to victory despite the early loss of Alex Hales (0) as they snapped a two game losing streak to give Stuart Broad his first victory as skipper.
Morgan led the way with a 27 ball, 49 before he was dismissed by Munaf Patel in the 16th over; despite the loss Bopara (31) and Samit Patel saw England home after a tense finish which saw them need 10 runs from the final over.
With the tension mounting after Patel conceded just three runs from the penultimate over, Bopara smashed three consecutive boundaries off the bowling of Praveen Kumar in the final over to seal victory.
India’s disappointing tour continued after they were restricted to a total of just 165 despite a half century from debutante Ajinkya Rahane (61) who helped the ODI World Champions reach 103-1 in the 12th over.
Not for the first time this summer, MS Dhoni’s side failed to capitalised on their strong start as England fought their way back into the game thanks to Jade Dernbach (4-22) who picked up four wickets.
Suresh Raina offered hope with a quick fire 33 from just 19 deliveries, which included two boundaries and three sixes but, as was the case during the test series, India’s lower order offered no resistance as they slumped to 165 all out.
Faced with a tricky run chase, England lost Hales in the opening over before Craig Kieswetter (18) and Kevin Pietersen (33) gave the host the perfect platform with a second wicket stand of 58.
With thoughts turning to a simple victory India struck back to remove the pair within the space of six deliveries to leave the hosts 61-3 after 7.1 overs before Morgan and Bopara saw England home.
