The Hobart Hurricanes strengthened their chances of becoming the first team to qualify for the KFC Big Bash semi finals thanks to a five wicket victory over the Sydney Thunder at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Jonathan Wells (29) and Travis Brit (29) got the home side off to a good start thanks to a 2nd wicket stand of 49 after Phil Jaques was bowled by Fidel Edwards (2-33) with the third delivery of their run chase.

Tom Triffitt enjoyed a quick fore cameo before Matt Johnson (6) sealed the victory by dispatching Luke Butterworth (1-25) over the deep midwicket boundary for a six.

Having won their first two games the Thunder now sit on the back of a two game losing streak thanks to another disappointing performance with the bat despite another batting master class from Chris Gayle.

The West Indian smashed five sixes and two boundaries during a brief 33 ball innings which saw him smash 53 run before he was dismissed by Jason Krejza (2-29) in the 14th over.

Sean Abbott (39) offered support but with Gayle gone the Thunders middle order buckled under the pressure as they slipped from 114-2 to just 136-8 thanks to some impressive bowling from Naved-ul-Hasan (3-22) to leave the Hurricanes facing a small run chase.
