Stuttering Scorches hold on to record victory

The stuttering Perth Scorches managed to over came the loss of five wickets in the final over of their innings to record an eight run victory over the Melbourne Stars at the MCG.

Having collapsed in spectacular style, the Scorches held the Stars at bay despite a fine innings from Matthew Wade (53) who delighted the home crowd with a well deserved half century.

Faced with a victory target of 137 the Heat struggled throughout their innings with only Wade and Rob Quiney (39) offering any resistant as the Scorches held on despite posting a total of just 136.

Having lost Cameron White (1), George Bailey (1) and David Hussey early on the home side batted back thanks to Wade and Quiney but Nathan Coulter-Nile (2-20) and Nathan Rimmington bowled superbly to keep the home side at bay.

It proved to be a happy ending for the Scorches after a major batting collapse had left them shell shocked after five batsman had lost their wickets in a seemingly game changing final over of their innings.

With the score 134-5, Paul Collingwood (12), Coulter-Nile (5), Brad Hogg (0), Michael Beer (0) and Ben Edmondson (0) lost their way thanks to superb bowling from James Faulkner (3-17) and Wade who claimed three run outs.

Despite the collapse Herschelle Gibbs’s (69) fine half century was enough to help the Scorches set a total which surprisingly was enough to help them claim their third straight victory.
