Sahara looking to pull the plug on the Warriors

Sahara India Parivar has announced they are withdrawing their sponsorship of the Indian cricket team as well as actively looking to withdrawal totally from the Pune Warriors who they brought for $370m almost two years ago.

The move comes after a number of disputes between Sahara and the BBCI which came to a head this week after the IPL Governing council refused to change the rules and increase the Warriors auction pot because of the injury to Yuvraj Singh who will miss this year’s tournament.

The statement released by Sahara said they would withdraw from all cricket under the BCCI but would ensure all monies due would be paid until a new team sponsor is found by the BCCI.

Having made the statement, the Warriors were absent from today’s player auction which got under way at the ITC Royal Gardenia in Bengaluru on Saturday morning.

Speaking after the announcement IPL Commissioner Rajiv Shukla said the BCCI would react to the news once Sahara had officially spoke to the board and made their decision officiall.

"It is unfortunate. But we haven't received anything in writing from them officially. We heard about it only through a media release. We can react only after they communicate with us in writing," said Shukla

"Right now we cannot comment on their withdrawal from the IPL. We don't have any means," he added. "(The) IPL will continue. The show will go on and IPL is not going to stop. The auction of the players have begun."
