Ganguly return fails to inspire slumping Warriors

The return of Kolkata’s prodigal son wasn’t enough to stop the Pune Warriors crashing to a six run defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Sourav Ganguly (36) returned to his home town with the slumping Warriors but the visiting skipper wasn’t able to inspire his side as they suffered their fifth straight defeat.

The result leaves them in serious danger of missing out on the playoff after they were restricted to a total of just 143-8, in their attempts to chase down the Knight Riders target of 151.

Ganguly and Angelo Mathews (35) gave the Warriors some hope with a 6th wicket stand of 73 but once Ganguly was dismissed by Rajat Bhatia (1-27) in the 18th over the Knight Riders held on.

Having batted first the Knight Riders posted a total of 150-5 thanks in part to Gautam Gambhir (56) and Brendon McCullum (42) who shared an opening stand of 113 before Gambhir was dismissed by Murali Kartik (1-22) in the 13th over.

Yusuf Pathan (11), Jacques Kallis (1) and Laxmi Shukla (0) quickly followed as the Knight Riders middle order failed to fire but the ruins scored by Gambhir and McCullum were more then enough to see off the Warriors.
