Smith pulls off great escape for the Indians
A quick fire 24 from Dwayne Smith was enough to help seal a two wicket victory for the Mumbai Indians who were on the verge of a spectacular collapse against the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The West Indian smashed Ben Hilfenhaus for a six and two boundaries from the final three deliveries if the game to seal wild celebration after the Indian looked on the verger of throwing the game away.
The Indians looked on course to chase down the Super Kings target of 174 thanks to Sachin Tendulkar (74) and Rohit Sharma (60) who enjoyed a 2nd wicket stand of 126 after the early loss of James Franklin (1).
With the victory line is sight Tendulkar was dismissed in the 16th over by Ravichandran Ashwin and the dismissal sparked a spectacular collapse to hand victory to the defending champions.
Dinesh Karthik (11), Amabti Rayudu (0), Sharma, Robin Peterson (0) and Harbhajan Singh (0) all followed in the space of two overs to leave the Indians needing 16 runs from the final over.
Having batted first the Super Kings posted a total of 173-8 thanks in part to Murali Vijay (41) and Dwayne Bravo (40) who led the visitors attack with great effect.
MS Dhoni enjoyed a cameo innings which saw him add 25 runs from just 15 balls to leave the Indian facing a run chase of 174 after Harbhajan Singh put the Super Kings into bat.
