We must learn from mistakes

Jon Lewis is appealing for a composed response to Tuesday's crushing Twenty20 Cup defeat at the hands of Somerset when they play Worcestershire at Bristol this evening.

Gloucestershire's captain says any repetition of that error-strewn display, which led to a 117-run defeat, could undermine the county's prospects of emerging from the Midlands/Wales and West group to contest the final stages later in the season.

Lewis warned: "We cannot afford another performance like the one we put in against Somerset. We allowed too many chances to slip away in the field and our bowlers did not always keep to their length and line."

Lewis was especially disappointed by Gloucestershire's response with the bat when chasing a world-record total of 250 and admitted: "We lacked composure.

"We knew we had to take chances chasing such a big total, but we should have been more calculating. I'd like to see a little bit more composure from the top order when we play Worcestershire."

Lewis and his players dissected Tuesday's horror show during a team meeting this morning and he said: "It's important we learn the lessons."

And on a positive note, he declared: "I still believe we can qualify from the group by playing some good cricket.

"We have a good team and we have good players who are capable of winning matches on their day. We'll regroup, talk about where we went wrong and move on from there."

Injured batsmen Hamish Marshall and Phil Weston will not be available for tonight's match or tomorrow's Twenty20 assignment against Warwickshire at Edgbaston (5.30pm).

Although New Zealand Test star Marshall is unlikely to feature at any stage during the competition, Weston could be pushing for a recall ahead of next Tuesday's fixture against Glamorgan in Bristol.

Gloucestershire are expected to continue with Ian Harvey and Craig Spearman opening, while David Brown and Will Rudge seem certain to appear.
