Notts set for biggest crowd in decades

Nottinghamshire’s Twenty20 Cup quarter final on Monday looks set to attract the biggest domestic crowd to Trent Bridge in decades.

More than 6,500 tickets have already been sold for the Outlaws clash with Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Ticket Office staff report that numbers are still rising all the time.

Although attendance figures have not been precisely recorded over the years, advance sales suggest the crowd on Monday will even exceed any of those at Trent Bridge when Notts were en-route to winning the NatWest Trophy in 1987 or the Benson & Hedges Cup in 1989.

Notts were drawn away in both the quarter and semi-finals in 1987 to Derbyshire and Gloucestershire and although they had a home tie with Kent in the midweek Benson & Hedges semi-final in 1989, were a long way short of capacity.

The last time Notts saw a crowd of more than 10,000 for a domestic match is believed to be in 1975, for a Gillette Cup quarter-final with Derbyshire.

Said Notts’ chief executive Derek Brewer: “We are thrilled with the overall success of Twenty20 this season and this is the icing on the cake. Obviously it provides a major boost to our finances.

“At the moment we’re just looking for as big a crowd as we can possibly get - certainly between 8-10,000 - and the fact that we have a home tie against Northants was a bonus.

“Bearing in mind how the sales are going, we would encourage anyone interested to book in advance and take advantage of the discounts we are offering. And we also urge supporters to arrive early.”

The Outlaws will warm up for the quarter-final with their opening match in Division One of the new NatWest Pro40 League Division One against Lancashire Lightning on Saturday.

Director of Cricket Mick Newell will approach the game in a similar style to Twenty20 and said: “Pro-40 cricket is definitely an extension of Twenty20 and because of that, I think you can expect us to use the same kind of tactics and plans.

“Lancashire are a very good one-day side and will provide us with a good test ahead of Monday evening. It’s important we maintain our form in preparation for the quarter-final.”

Advance-only group deals include eight children and two adults for £60, while 10 adults can book their seats for a special rate of £96.

Notts members can buy advance tickets costing £10 for adults and students, £5 for juniors under-16 and senior citizens and £28 for a family of two adults and two juniors, while advance tickets for non-members are priced at £12, £6 and £28 respectively.

The closing date for advance bookings is 1pm on Saturday July 22, with tickets on the day priced at £15, £8 and £38.
