Grenada match on

Grenada ‘s players did a rain dance of delight after they beat St Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday evening to be the first team to advance to the semifinals of the Stanford 20/20 Cricket Tournament.

The victory, by 12 runs, came through the Duckworth/Lewis Method after rain ended the match with the Grenadians on 79 for three off 10.1 overs in pursuit of SVG’s 122 for seven off 20 overs.

After the umpires made the result officials, the Grenadians did a lap honour and also danced outside their dressing room as the rain continued.

“We are very happy with the result and we are confident of doing well in the semifinal,” said captain Rawl Lewis after he took the Man-of-the-Match award of US$25 000. “Right now we’re happy, and I can tell you we are not going to ease up now.”

They will go on to meet the winner of Friday’s quarter-final clash between big guns Jamaica and Guyana. The semifinals will be played on Thursday, August 10 and Friday, August 11 at 7 pm each evening.

Lewis, the 31-year-old veteran of 14 seasons in first-class cricket, was clever in his approach and it paid off. The leg spinner introduced himself into the bowling attack after ten overs when St Vincent and the Grenadines were on 68 for one. He took three wickets for 18 runs from his four overs and stopped any thoughts of a late innings assault.

All his wickets came in his final over which was quite eventful. He dismissed Kenroy Martin and Kissenger McLean with consecutive balls, both to catches in the deep. The next ball John Sylvetser dropped a tough head-high chance at mid-wicket which would have given Lewis his hat-trick. However, off the final ball of the over, Nixon McLean smashed a catch to deep mid-on to give Lewis the third wicket.

Earlier the Vicentians had raced 50 in four overs, with openers, Romel Currency, who smashed 33 from 23 balls, and Miles Bascombe, whose top score of 35 included four fours and a six, putting together 61 in 7.4 overs,

The Vincentians said they were disappointed to go out of the competition, but are already looking forward to next year.

“This was a tough way to go out, but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” skipper Deighton Butler said. “I can assure you next year we will come harder.”
