Brady punishes Redbacks

Western Australia has cruised to a 55-run victory over South Australia in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash encounter at the WACA Ground on Thursday night.

Man-of-the-match David Bandy bludgeoned 52 runs from 21 deliveries and Marcus North smashed 59 from 37 as the Warriors thumped their way to 4-193, before bowling the visitors out for 138 in the 20th over.

Mark Cosgrove (50 not out from 42 balls) was the only Redbacks batsman to put up any real resistance, with spinner Brad Hogg (3-24) and Ben Edmondson (2-29) the destroyers with the ball.

The visitors' run chase got off to a disastrous start, with Nathan Adcock falling for a duck and Darren Lehmann getting clean bowled by Edmondson for 10 as SA slumped to 2-17 in the fourth over.

Daniel Harris tonked 19 runs off Brett Dorey's third over to lead a mini-revival, but when Edmondson knocked over his castle for 22 and Callum Ferguson holed out for five, the Redbacks were in all sorts of trouble at 4-50 after eight overs.

The total crawled to 4-58 after 10, but with the required run-rate exceeding 13 runs per over, Ken Skewes unleashed two big sixes off spinner Brad Hogg to reinvigorate the run chase.

But when Hogg dismissed Skewes (20), Graham Manou (three) and Ryan Harris (one) in quick succession, the Redbacks' hopes of an unlikely win were extinguished, with the Redbacks adding 43 runs for their last three wickets.

Earlier, WA opener Luke Ronchi made an explosive start to the innings, smashing 25 runs from the opening two overs, before Ryan Harris made a double breakthrough in the third over, leaving the Warriors in early trouble at 2-29.

Adam Voges (42 from 32) and North thumped the total to 2-100 after 12 overs, before North notched his half-century shortly after with a cracking shot to the mid-wicket fence.

However, the WA captain's knock came to an end when he lofted Dan Cullen straight down the ground and Ryan Harris took a great catch running at full flight.

With the Warriors well-placed at 4-132 with five overs remaining, the scene was set for some late big hitting, and Bandy duly obliged.

The 28-year-old bludgeoned seven fours and two sixes as he and Matt Johnston (seven not out) combined for an unbeaten 62-run partnership from just 32 balls.

Ryan Harris was the best of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 2-25 from four overs in a disciplined display, while Cullen was also miserly with 1-27 from four overs.
